Previsioni settimana valutaria 13 - 18 Marzo 2011

Cosenza (Italy), 12 Marzo 2011

  1. Apprezzamento dell'Euro sul Dollaro USA;
  2. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Yen giapponese;
  3. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Sterlina inglese;
  4. Apprezzamento dello Yen giapponese su Euro (FX);
  5. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Franco svizzero;
  6. Apprezzamento del Franco svizzero su Euro;
What You Should Do About It".

"You would think that a disaster like an earthquake registering 8.9 on the Richter scale would cause a currency to, well, swoon. But the yen did the opposite on Friday, riding to new highs after an initial plunge.
What do you do now?
Rebecca Patterson, global head of currencies and commodities at J.P. Morgan's [JPM 45.74 0.21 (+0.46%) ] private bank, expects a repatriation effort to bolster the yen near term, she said on tonight's premiere of "Money in Motion Currency Trading," but she doesn't expect the effect to last. "The last thing they need right now" is a strong yen, and they will take steps to keep that from happening. I still think Japan is going to try to fight this" yen rise, she said. Patterson recommended that investors go long dollars and short yen if dollar/yen [JPY=X 81.85 -0.06 (-0.07%) ] gets to 81, with a stop loss of 78 and a target around 86. Andrew B. Busch, currency and public policy strategist at BMO Capital Markets, agreed that shorting the yen makes sense at current levels because he is nervous about the scope of the disaster. "There is a big problem there. If it really gets much worse than it is, you're going to see the yen weaken." He also recommends shorting yen, he told Melissa Lee, the host of CNBC's "Money In Motion."

Segnalo inoltre l'articolo CNBC 11/3 "Will the Dollar's Rally Continue?", in cui si sostiene che l'apprezzamento del Dollaro USA sull'Euro appare probabile...una posizione differente da quella da me espressa.

AGGIORNAMENTI

Domenica 13 Marzo 2011 [1]: La Bank of Japan informa che è pronta ad intervenire sui mercati immettendo liquidità straordinaria (vedi Comdirect 13/3 "Presse: BoJ will mit massiver Geldspritze Folgen des Bebens in Griff bekommen").

In particolare:

"Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said the central bank will provide huge amounts of liquidity to the banking system on Monday, reinforcing the bank's determination to keep markets stable in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck northeastern Japan. Economics Minister Kaoru Yosano also said the government will fight decisively against speculative moves and will not tolerate short-selling to take advantage of the quake. "We will monitor market conditions and plan to provide markets with a lot of liquidity first thing tomorrow morning," Shirakawa told reporters after attending a meeting of cabinet ministers for discussion on the economy on Sunday. The BOJ is likely to provide 2 trillion to 3 trillion yen in funds through its market operations Monday morning, two to three times the normal amount, to soothe markets and keep short-term borrowing costs from spiking. Shirakawa also said the central bank will thoroughly consider the economic impact of the earthquake when the board meets for a rate review on Monday. The Financial Services Agency said it was also rigidly monitoring markets to prevent any unfair transactions after the quake, adding that Tokyo financial markets will operate as normal on Monday. The BOJ is set to keep interest rates on hold at a range of zero to 0.1 percent at its rate review on Monday, which was cut short from the initially planned two-day meeting, but keep markets on guard against the chance of further monetary easing if damage from the quake threatens Japan's return to a moderate economic recovery".

"The Bank of Japan poured a record amount of cash into the financial system and doubled the size of their asset-purchase plan to shield the economy from the effects of the nation’s strongest earthquake on record. The central bank pumped 15 trillion yen ($183 billion) into money markets to assure financial stability amid a plunge in stocks and surge in credit risk. Governor Masaaki Shirakawa and his board also increased the program that buys assets from government bonds to exchange-traded funds to 10 trillion yen. Policy makers said they were concerned corporate and household sentiment will worsen, with production set to decline in the aftermath of the temblor and an ensuing tsunami. The March 11 catastrophe killed an estimated number of more than 10,000 people, shut down factories, prompted rolling power cuts and sparked the risk of a meltdown at a nuclear power plant".

Vedi Reuters 15/3 "BOJ pumps more funds into banking system": "The Bank of Japan on Tuesday offered to pump 8 trillion yen (60 billion pounds) into the banking system, continuing its huge fund injection aimed at easing market jitters in the face escalating nuclear crisis and fears of unprecedented damage from the earthquake. It follows a record 15 trillion yen the BOJ offered in same-day market operations on Monday. "Japan's production and the economic power have not fallen. I think the market confusion will calm down in a short time," Economics Minister Kaoru Yosano told a news conference after a cabinet meeting".

Vedi Marketwatch 15/3 "Bank of Japan injects $245 bln into markets": "Japan's central bank injected 20 trillion yen ($245 billion) into the money markets Tuesday in an effort to help calm financial markets, according to reports. The move was designed to ensure that banks have enough liquidity to meet a surge in demand from companies and households seeking to raise funds. The same-day funds injection came as Japan's unfolding nuclear crisis deepened on Tuesday, with an explosion at reactor No. 2 and as the danger spread to reactor No. 4 at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant. Elevated radiation levels were reported in Tokyo as southerly winds carried the radioactive plume from Japan's eastern coast towards urban areas".

Vedi CNBC 16/3 "Moody's Cuts Portugal's Debt Rating by Two Notches".

"Moody's on Wednesday cut Portugal's sovereign debt rating by two notches to A3 and said it might have to downgrade again given the impact of high borrowing costs and the difficulty of meeting tough fiscal targets. (...). Moody's said it still held a negative outlook on Portugal's bond ratings as it considers a further downgrade to be more likely than an upgrade over the coming one to two years. The rating agency said it was concerned about the high interest rates the government might have to pay to borrow on capital markets and what those rates could mean for the economy as a whole. It also questioned how successful the government would be in achieving the tough fiscal targets it has set itself going forward".

The Washington Post 16/3 "Japan central bank’s cash injections hit nearly $700 billion amid disaster aftermath": "Japan’s central bank continued to flood money markets with cash on Wednesday, bringing its total emergency funding to nearly $700 billion as it tries to soothe fears about the economic impact of the catastrophic earthquake, tsunami and unfolding nuclear crisis. The latest offer of Bank of Japan funding came as stock markets bounced back from a steep sell-off that sent the benchmark Nikkei down 20 percent over two days to an almost two-year low. The index finished up 5.7 percent at 9,093.72. The Bank of Japan conducted emergency operations for the the third day in a row, bringing its total liquidity injection to 55.6 trillion yen ($688.3 billion) since Monday. By flooding the banking system with money, it hopes banks will continue lending and meet the likely surge in demand for post-disaster funds. (...) Kyohei Morita, chief economist at Barclays Capital Japan, estimates disaster losses of about 15 trillion yen ($186 billion) based on currently available information. That represents about 3 percent of Japan’s gross domestic product".

In particolare:

"Japanese Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Japan agreed with central banks of the United States, Britain and Canada as well as the European Central Bank to jointly intervene in the currency market. Markets were caught off guard by the first joint action in over a decade, expecting Japan to have to act alone.
Traders said the Bank of Japan was immediately spotted buying dollars versus the yen, though it seemed to be meeting heavy offers. Each respective central bank agreed to intervene and sell the yen when their respective markets open.
Market players expected Japan and other central banks to keep intervening if the dollar threatened to fall back below 80 yen and make a run at the 76.25 all-time low struck this week. The G7 has long warned against excessive volatility in exchange rates.
But many traders were expected to need to unload dollars at higher levels and slow any advance, especially after Thursday's shocking plunge in dollar/yen that saw it collapse more than 4 percent in just an hour.
"It is a positive surprise," said Mitsuru Sahara, chief FX manager at Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi-UFJ in Tokyo.
"The impact will be there, as it is difficult now to sell the dollar below 80 yen ... I think it is aimed at preventing a sharp plunge and bringing dollar/yen back up to levels before it started plunging, rather than trying to push it higher above 85 yen. I don't expect follow-up interventions to the upside."
The dollar's gains slowed after the initial burst higher, with Japanese exporters and traders stuck with long yen positions using the opportunity to unload. Some individual Japanese margin traders were also spotted selling dollars.
The rare G7 joint intervention capped a frantic week for Japanese markets that saw the Nikkei suffer its worst two-day rout since the 1987 crash and the yen soaring as investors watched the country's nuclear crisis escalate.
The dollar jumped 3.3 percent on the day to as high as 81.50 yen on trading platform EBS, extending a rebound from a record low of 76.25 yen plumbed on Thursday.
The sell off in the previous session came after a break of the 1995 record low of 79.75 triggered a cascade of automatic sell orders, some tied to leveraged positions and structured FX derivatives, in thin trade between the U.S. and Asian trading days.
The yen has climbed steadily since last week's earthquake, as Japanese and international investors closed long positions in higher-yielding, riskier assets such as the Australian dollar, funded by cheap borrowing in the Japanese currency.
Expectations that Japanese insurers and companies will bring money home to pay for claims and reconstruction also contributed to the yen's strength.
The euro jumped 3.5 percent to 114.60 yen, boosted in part by comments from Japanese Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda that the European Central Bank may intervene in euro/yen. Commodity currencies, such as the Australian dollar, performed even better and recovered a bit from their recent hammering".

Previsioni settimana valutaria 20 - 25 Febbraio 2011

Cosenza  (Italy), 19 Febbraio 2011

  1. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Euro sulle piazze asiatiche, e apprezzamento dell'Euro sul Dollaro USA sulle piazze europee: in generale, tendenza all'apprezzamento del Dollaro USA sull'Euro;
  2. Sostanziale parità dell'Euro sullo Yen giapponese, con tendenza all'apprezzamento;
  3. Apprezzamento dell'Euro sul Franco svizzero;
  4. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Sterlina inglese;
  5. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Franco svizzero;
  6. Apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Yen giapponese;
  7. Apprezzamento della Sterlina inglese su Euro (FX);

Mercoledi 23 Febbraio 2011: Giornata strana oggi.

Vedi Reuters 24/2 "Brent backs off $120, eyes on Libyan, Saudi supply": "Oil surged more than 7.5 percent to its highest since August 2008 on Thursday on concern that uprisings in Libya could spread to other major oil producers in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia. Brent crude oil for April spiked up $8.54 a barrel to a peak of $119.79 before easing to around $114 by 11:15 a.m. EST. U.S. crude futures for April rose as high as $103.41, the highest September 2009. They were up $1.00 at $99.10 at 11:15 a.m. EST. Unrest in the world's 12th-biggest exporter has cut at least 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) from Libya's 1.6 million bpd output, according to Reuters calculations. ENI Chief Executive Paolo Scaroni said Libyan output had fallen much more dramatically, estimating it was putting 1.2 million barrels per day less into the market. The Financial Times quoted an unnamed official as saying Saudi Arabia was in active talks with European refiners who may be hit by a disruption in Libyan exports. That would be the clearest sign yet that OPEC's biggest exporter is ready to respond to the cut in Libyan output").

Sabato 26 Febbraio 2011:

Per un'interpretazione differente vedi CNBC 4/2 "Dollar Gains Broadly on US Jobless Rate Decline", secondo cui si assisterà ad un apprezzamento del Dollaro USA su Euro ("Overall, we think the euro's move was overdone and the retracement we've seen in the second part of this week should probably continue into early next week," said John Doyle, strategist at Tempus Consulting in Washington").

AGGIORNAMENTI

  • Anomalia su base quotidiana: previsione numero 1;

Mercoledi 9 Febbraio 2011 [1]: Alcune notizie potrebbero destabilizzare i cambi e portare a maggiore volatilità. Eccole:
  1. La Cina ha aumentato per la seconda volta in un mese i tassi di interesse, per contrastare l'inflazione interna (vedi Reuters 9/2 "Analysis: Markets fall behind the curve of China's tightening";
  2. L'agenzia di rating Moody's dichiara che il livello di debito pubblico del Giappone è insostenibile senza un'adeguata riforma fiscale, e che non si può sperare solo sulla crescita economica per cercare di risolvere i problemi di biancio (vedi Reuters 9/2 "Moody's warns on Japan debt and urges fiscal reform");
  3. Il Presidente FED Ben Bernanke terrà oggi una testimonianza di fronte al Congresso USA sul tema congiuntura economica, mercato del lavoro e conti pubblici (vedi Comdirect 9/2 "Devisen: Eurokurs gestiegen - Warten auf Bernanke";
Staremo a vedere.

Ecco uno stralcio: "Yet currencies are hard to track by even the most seasoned traders and it’s not for the average investor. And you’re no George Soros, although you’ll surely end up breaking something — your own bank account. Even institutions can get scammed. Called “Forex,” short for “foreign exchange,” this form of trading requires guessing on whether a currency or basket of them rises or falls. There are more scams out there than regulators can keep up with and some schemes even ensnare experienced institutional investors. A $4 trillion market, Forex is dominated by big banks and institutions, who trade around the clock based on constantly changing streams of information. There’s a reason why the big boys play this game. It’s volatile, turns on a dime and is not predictable. Currency swings often have nothing to do with the day’s headlines and could be manipulated by big traders. No matter what the FOREX ads say, you will have no advantage over the biggest players. None whatsoever".
